MUTUAL MATERIAL INTERACTIONS
Aachen, Germany, 2016
This series of works are based on the interaction of two materials: Bauschaum (isolation foam) and an outer structure to contain it.
The variation on each experiment relates to the interaction between the expansive nature of the foam and the tensile strength of the containment shape. The first series were made using an origami-like paper structure and the second one, a plastic net. Both foam and structure are initially weak and flexible but as time elapses they acquire rigid state due to their complimentary material characteristics.
Freeform structures and compressed shapes are the result of these experimentations.
As the foam became rigid after 20 minutes, a series of impressions on paper were made by dropping the soft foam objects, setting up a trace, and an expanding footprint.
